The only clue that I have is the size of the mail makes a difference. A few lines in the body of the mail doesn't hang the system. Mail with more of a substantial body does hang the system. The MS SMTP gateway tends to freeze from other sites too. (Big surprise! :-) ) I'm thinking that there is a switch or setting

All clients freeze for 10-15 secs since exchange server install.
We used to use Microsoft Mail and that was fine for both the PC's and Macs - which used the old "Microsoft Mail" program (different versions for Macs and PC's, client is started and some are crashing half way through using it - or worse - don't even start up - they just freeze when you start MSExchange client!
